Description
A Passion for Africa.
24 inches by 17 inches (A2)
It was sugar that took the British to the Caribbean, silk and spices that took them to India, as for Africa it was Gold, Ivory, and a passion for a world so totally different from the one in Europe. Young British solders saw for the first time, almost naked women. A passion they undoubtedly wished to expression in an embrace was all too often shown in violence. The rape of Africa had begun while the young men of the British armed forces lost their innocence. Women didn’t have to wear big fluffy dresses, decorated in industrial made lace. They were far more appealing without the dresses. Their overloads at home, didn’t want interracial love, they wanted gold and ivory to fuel the City of London.
It is history that has inspired me to create with artwork. It is on a canvas board and can be hung on a wall, but it also had texture and depth, giving it a 3D, sculptural aspect. All the pieces were cut out by hand. Like the British Empire in Africa, this was a labour of love.
This is a 3D sculpture on a 2D surface. It is created using, wood, bark, fabric, metal foil, glitter, glass paint. pearl paint, paper. card and oil paint on A2 canvas board. The biggest problem I have had is getting a photo that really shows it off. The image sparkles and reaches of the canvas and out into the room. It demands those passing by look at it.
