She seeks to escape the chaos surrounding her by delving into her memories, as a means to block out the exhausting and distracting hustle and bustle. She stands out against this hazy world behind her, visible through the strong contrast between her black dress and hair and the blue background. The closer she gets with her inner thoughts, the less real and distinct the “real” world appears to be. The coloured pencils produce a dreamy atmosphere, where shapes and people seem to be disappearing away in the distance as clouds of smoke. By contrast, the central figure in this illustration was drawn in Chinese ink. Her facial expression is melancholic and sad, and we are asked to reflect on her emotional state of mind.
