Asia Bibi is a young Pakistani woman, Christian, mother of five children imprisoned since 2010 in the death row on charges of blasphemy.
The story dates back to 2009.
Asia was working in the fields when a dispute broke out between her and some Muslim women. The women denounce Asia to the authorities claiming that the dispute would have offended the Prophet Muhammad. Although Asia declared herself completely innocent she was locked up in a small room, beaten and imprisoned. Asia Bibi has always denied the accusation of blasphemy, claiming to be persecuted and discriminated because of her religious beliefs. After a few months, in a flash trial, the court of Nankana condemns Asia Bibi to death, without having any proof of her guilt. The appeal presented by the defense to the Lahore court after four years confirmed the death penalty. Asia spends years of harsh prison in total isolation, during which various jailers try to kill her. On October 31st 2018 at 9.20 am (5.20 am in Italy), the Supreme Court of Pakistan declared the Christian woman innocent decreeing her release. Immediate protests by Islamic fundamentalists who are blocking the capital with riots and demonstrations promising certain death as soon as she is released from prison.
Now Asia Bibi is in a safe place.
