  • Drawing strange characters is my thing

Lucy Calderbank, born in 1998, is a half french/half english artist living in Paris. She began drawing as a child, and sketching quirky characters in class quickly became one of her favourite pastimes. She never gave up on her practice, but took it up more seriously after completing her Bachelor of Arts in England. Lockdowns unleashed a wave of creativity, and she started painting relentlessly. At the end of 2020, she entered a foundation year in Illustration at the École de Condé in Paris, where she learned to try new mediums (including gouache and charcoal), explore the use of colour in her work, and deepen her interest in certain thematic concepts, such as the moon, the dialectic between nature and the city, and isolation. Her work develops surreal characters, and delves into dark worlds, with dreamy and mysterious undertones. She is influenced by artists such as Francis Bacon, Edvard Munch and Tamara de Lempika. Lucy mainly works on paper, using watercolour, coloured pencils, posca pens, gouache and ink.
