Description
This painting is an attempt to express the insecurity and lostness that might be felt when being exposed to a different cultural context. Furthermore, when being part of a culturally underrepresented community, it becomes harder to identify oneself in the predominant Western discourse. Also the distinction between “you” and “we” imposes a different dimension in the way ones can see themselves in relation to others. This displacement raises further questions of belonging and identity that become more difficult to answer. “Who am I? Where do I belong? Do I belong here? Can I be accepted as I am?…” However, I believe that through visual representation and dissemination, one has the power to at least highlight the existence of this problem.
