Dominion: the painting is about the idea. Degard wishes the viewer to stop and consider this
single idea.
Dominion and domination are the ideas which lead to all wars. The wars we rage in our
homes, when we need to be right and in control or when one nation-state wants
dominion over another.
Degard’s reason for using the word dominion is that this is the word used in
Genesis 1 of the Bible, when God gave the Earth to man: “And God said, let us make
man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion …”
Humanity has taken dominion to mean dominate, which has caused the climate crisis and all of
our wars. Degard wants the viewer to take deep consideration and caution with this idea.
